-------------------

When the Japanese Zen master Bankei (Japan 1622-1693) died, he left no successors. He taught his whole life to peasants and farmers.

All of them achieved a deep understanding of Zen thanks to his teacher. None of them decided to become a Buddhist priest, they were all happy with their teacher's teaching, but they did not want to become preaching monks. They recognized that there was no need to label themselves as followers of Bankei, or as followers of Zen, or as Buddhists, because they knew that he who really grasps the teaching and understands it, knows that he has not really achieved anything. Everything, including Awakening (satori) returns to Ku (emptiness). And from Ku will come new things in due course. Therefore, the spiritual descendants of Bankei are known as "Nameless Descendants". Bankei's teaching lived on in his mind to the end of his days, but none boasted of being his disciple. It was not necessary.
